Zyrphath, the Shadowking
« on: November 27, 2012, 08:17:14 AM »

"From the great fire that thawed the hearts of men and brought light into the world, so too came the Shadow and its king. Like moths to a flame they are drawn to him, not capable of seeing that the brightness they steer towards is not life-giving warmth, but cries of damnation - the cold remnants of those who went before them. Echoes of the void."

[I.] Prologue

 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The spiraling staircase seems to have no end. Deeper and deeper into the earth you descend, following the old scribe. Eventually, you lose all sense of time. The dark, monotone surroundings stifle your thoughts, threatening to choke the life out of you, should you so much as let your guard down for even a split second. After a timeless eternity, the stairs seem to end, with very visible evidence that the rest of them have long since crumbled and fallen into the bottomless pit below. Stepping further out on the edge than any sane person would dare, the scribe chuckles, the only noise ever to come from his mouth, before swaying forward and falling face first into the sea of darkness.

For a few minutes, despair takes you. In disbelief, you stare into the cold nothing that so mercilessly swallowed your guide. For a period longer than you can remember, you stand there, wanting to turn around and climb back up the stairs. Yet, somehow, you don't. There's something about the mysterious below that won't let go of you. And already, it is too late. Your heart begins racing, as the understanding comes to you. Seduced by the pool of shadows, you can no longer resist. Adrenaline rushes through your body as you so hesitantly take a slow few steps towards the edge. Without warning, the vortex of darkness rises, devouring you in an instant. Your eyes roll back into your head, and down into the pit you plummet.

You come to your senses. By some miracle, you are still alive. And standing before a corridor. You have no memory of what happened between standing on the broken stair and ending up down here. You begin walking down the dimly lit corridor, a path that seems to become longer for every step you take. But just as you think the next step will make the tiny opening in the distance disappear, a familiar shape emerges instead. Far, far in front of you, the scribe is steadily walking the same way as you. Fear and relief strikes you simultaneously, having you sprint for your very life to catch up. At the moment you are within arms reach of your destination, an archway appears behind the hooded figure. In awe, you gasp for air as you enter a a dead and even darker room. The cold silence is burdening, pressing on your mind. But still, despite of this, you cannot bring yourself to speak, not even the tiniest squeal. Something forbids you. This seems to to be the final stop.

The room is enormous. As you realize the massive extent of the space, it is no longer a room, but a grand hall. And it is empty, save for a single item. You walk up to the ancient pedestal bookstand. The book upon it is closed, the leathercover being covered in a thick layer of dust. With careful and nervous fascination, you dust it off and open it. As the first page is revealed, a wail rips into your ears. You jump, caught completely off guard, but something within tells you that there is no use worrying. The wail comes not from this world. The strong walls of stone sling the echo back and forth, eating away at it. With each bounce, it becomes weaker, but the pain inside it seems only to grow. And at last, just before your own heart shatter in sorrow, the last bit of life in the wail dies and becomes one with the dead walls.

You weep bitter tears, each drop of salty water symbolizing the blood of your very soul. Consumed by grief, you can no longer stand. You fall to your knees, damning the whole world before you. Sinking deeper and deeper, until you no longer want to live. You want it to stop. Everything. Life. Not just your own. All life. And then your tears stop. An eon of sorrow ends, and you get back up on your feet, trembling. The compassion you felt when you had first heard the wail was no more. The only thing you harbor now, is bitterness. A new resolute has formed within you, and with that, your eyes can finally focus on the pages of the book...

[II.] The Person

This is perhaps the most important chapter for those wishing to understand the nature of and behind Zyrphath. For while still amongst men, often in the guise of a man, speaking like man; he is not of mortal flesh or blood anymore. A new era has begun for that which resides in the shell of what was once a Drow.

[II.I] The Synopsis

-: Gender: Male.
-: Race: Avatar; formerly Dark Elf.

-: Origin: Northern Valgard.
-: Residence: Dûrlonn Fortress & Elenion.
-: Political Stance: Liberal.

[Back to the ToC]

[II.II] Conditions

  • Chains of Faith: Bound by the ways of Maedhros.

The extent of Zyrphath's devotion, as it would for anyone on this level of faithful extremism, goes so far that it is beyond practically possible for him to commit any action in contrary to the principles of his master.
  • Maedhros' Favor: Blinded.

A mark of honor and dedication amongst both Drow and other worshipers of Maedhros. Though technically blind, magical aptitude allows him to feel his surroundings at some distance. At night or otherwise in darkness, this "sight" is greatly enhanced.

[Back to the ToC]

[II.III] Personality

Arrogance, intolerance and impatience were once dominant features in his behavior. These flaws were allowed to rage freely, causing recklessness and rash decisions in situations of heat. They are still present though masked and usually hidden away from the public to see. Ever since facing the unknown darkness of the catacombs beneath Dûrlonn, he was never the same man. The ability he had to think ahead and form long-term machinations found a new height, and these days one will never find Zyrphath committing an action that does not mirror plans or actions to come several years into the future.

To the random passer-by, good or evil, a clean and friendly tone is met. Exceptionally charismatic and emanating a powerful aura of confidence and strength, he rarely has much trouble with charming most people he crosses paths with. But still, something about him is not quite right. It's nothing you can put your finger on, and the average denizen of Entar will never notice much of it. But to those of insight and/or experience, he will not manage to retain the smooth, deceptive appearance he tries so hard to uphold. Deep down, they will know something is off, without having anything clear to point at. It's a hunch and a gut feeling.

Underneath the relatively smooth surface, darkness broods. The trickery employed to reach the ultimate goal is beyond imagination, both in creativity and ruthlessness. He will stop at nothing - no magic, no uttered word, no lie, no incompassionate and cold-blooded murder - nothing is taboo. Whatever it takes to preserve the chances he believes himself to have at an even greater existence, he will do. Without so much as flinching, he will lie your skin full, while witnessing the slaughter of your own children right behind your back. Cold of heart and ruthless in method, to say that the hunger for power drives him to become a fatally dangerous person is a vast understatement.

While he is able to pretend, he does not actually feel empathy for others, or love, or sadness. He will emulate them for the sake of getting what he wants and upholding a facade that lets him further his ideals. A sly and cunning sense of choosing his battles has evolved, which to win, which to lose, and which to not engage in at all. It has become his specialty and his most sacred weapon to trick people into underestimating himself, always keeping all his cards as close to his chest as possible.

Loyalty, as we define it, does not exist in his mind. Loyalty is only something that can exist so long there is a mutual need for each other's help or services. Once that condition goes away, so does any alliance. No matter who, no matter what, no matter where - the word of Zyrphath, faithful servant to Maedhros, cannot be taken for lasting truth. In a nutshell, he will feed you the words he believes necessary for you to come around, abuse your person to and for his own benefit, and leave you to the wolves afterwards. He's not one to commit an outright stab in the back, but he holds no allegiance to anyone, unless he sees an opportunity to gain something from these.

[II.IV] Appearance

Original art, and copyright: Gileryd

Zyrphath's Shadow Ascendant form

In many ways, Zyrphath has retained his elven appearance with few changes. Notably, he is larger than he was, and larger than the average elf. His physique is slender and fit, but not out-right muscular. Dressed to impress, he adorns himself with a exquisite robes, most of them colored purple or blue, with white or gray trims and elaborate golden embroideries. Weaved into the fabric is actual strands of precious metals, coming in shapes akin to jewelry-made chains and similar. His shoulders are mounted by massive, golden pauldrons befitting of his position. A mask and its accompanying hat hides most parts of his face from view. The only things of note that are visible, are the eyes; emanating what seems like an infinitely light and very translucent, red smoke, it's hard to miss them.

His voice is dark and deep, powerful and commanding, yet as if only a meek whisper. It's coarse and rough, uncomfortable to the ears. It rumbles, shaking the ground beneath and the trees above, but at the same time it is almost non-existent and inaudible. The majestic tones roll out with great and confident authority, threatening to crush those around it merely with its own weight.

Zyrphath can also shroud himself in shadow, only to emerge in his Ascendant form (an action which is required to access the full range of his powers). When in this form, he is an intangible and never constant mass of darkness, a kind that is even darker than the most lonely and haunting of nights. Hints of a deep blue hue can be seen around him in this manifestation, a sort of frosty fog fuming from the core of his physical representation. And yet, it is only a shadow and a sea of black nothing. There are no protruding physical features, and at times, it may seem like he does not even have a physical form; that it is just all magics. But in all truth and honesty, he does. His body is that of the darkness he commands, but still does it hold a physical form. It can be touched upon, it can be punched and ravaged, but it is not static like flesh. To a certain extent it can change, but too far away from the humanoid shape it cannot go, without the use of magic.

Any physical form he takes is not directly visible, as it is with most others. It is, effectively, nothing but darkness, cloaked in a pool of pitch black - impossible to rest ones eyes upon - the true figure can never be observed while Zyrphath commands even a fraction of the domain of his Lord. Drow or mage, none does it matter: their eyes cannot pierce this shadow, and their magic cannot unveil the truth it hides.

In the simplest of descriptions, his Ascendant form embodies the lack of light and energy, and portrays the exact opposite: A cold and lifeless void that only consumes, the Black Titan; A fog-like darkness that haunts even the night itself, the Shadowking.

[Back to the ToC]

[III.] The Magic

Zyrphath wields dark, terrible magic. While capable of direct harm, the larger part of his repertoire as well as his own preference falls more closely to manipulation and control - over environment as well as creatures and people. Oozing dark magics of massive potency, he can easily orchestrate grand illusions, breathe tenacious life into the smallest shadow, hinder sight as well as movement and sap the temperature right out of the air - to name only a few examples.

Perhaps somewhat strangely, and a bit unlike ordinary faith magic, in order to access this arsenal of power he has to spend his own lifeforce, and only the most powerful of influences require anything more than his will to manifest. Servitude and worship is what gives him life to begin with, and in this regard to Maedhros - speaking of the bond between the Dark Lord and Zyrphath specifically, at least - essence of life is no different from essence of power. If something is not worth giving life for, it is not worth granting power for.

However, even minor influences can be accessed with a lesser toll to his lifeforce if he provides the proper ritual. These rituals vary in detail, but exist to open a stronger conduit between Zyrphath's embodiment and his altar - ceremonial displays of domination, ritual sacrifice, and on occasion, a special type of incantation that the clergy of Cabal Exaneti has dubbed "the voiceless song".

The conduit that allows this flow, this conversion of lifeforce to power, has its own quirks. It is strong in darkness, in closeness to his Dûrlonn altar and in great opposition. It is weaker in situations that are the opposite. Partially because of these somewhat unintuitive relationships (lifeforce becoming power, hardship becoming frenzy), Zyrphath's deception is ever-present and makes him surprisingly lethal to anyone not extensively prepared.

Upon revealing his true form, his Shadow Ascendant, the conduit is as strong as it can ever be. The height of his power is only accessible in this form.

[IV.] The Strengths and Weaknesses

-: Social :-

Strengths: Cunning and sly, with an uncannily charismatic ability to lie and deceive without as much as blinking -- the Avatar will use every trick in the book to eel his way through society. Those who refuse to come around often find that other means have been put to use, in order to achieve the desired result. Although, those who openly oppose an Avatar are few in numbers, because of who the Avatars are. Going against Divine words, even if it is outside ones own alignment, is for most people not an option.

Weaknesses: While able to disguise himself and hide his true, psychopathic nature, there are still some aspects of interaction between men and elves that he is not fully able to mimic, because he does not understand them. The aura that often accompanies him also has a habit of unsettling common folk and people who aren't of a particularly fearless persuasion, making interactions that do not involve intimidation a little more difficult.

-: Racial :-

Refer to the following areas for details concerning racials:

Conditions
Avatar

-: Combat :-

Strengths: By utilizing a wide array of offensive and distractive capabilities, the Avatar can strike at both close and long ranges, though almost always aiming to confuse and disorient before making any kind of attack. The many different approaches available to the Avatar makes him an incredibly versatile opponent. Despite the lack of physical strength, the force with which strikes land is astonishing. His omni-sensing abilities, strong endurance and stamina, both physical and mental, makes sure that anyone brave enough to take on this creature of shadows will get their moneys worth, and then some.

Weaknesses: Any defense the Avatar has, is its own abilities. There exists no armor or physical toughness that automatically mitigates damage. Deflection or absorption of attacks only happens through active participation from the Avatar. Basically, this means that he has to see the incoming blow, and have the time to counter it. His existence relies upon evasion and counter-attacks, sacrificing resilience for subtlety and vast offensive options. While the ascension to Avatar granted some protection from the puny antics of mortals, it also introduced a level of frailty. No matter from what source, is not a very good idea to take a hit, if it can be avoided.

-: Intelligence :-

Strengths: Zyrphath has a strong, burning intellect. Alongside his dedication and unfaltering will, he is quick to notice inconsistencies and is quite good at "connecting the dots", as it were. He's a veteran of war - adept at tactics, always looking for the means to bring about the end, constantly probing for exit strategies, and has a firm grasp of the basis for social engineering.

Weaknesses: Mundane sciences and culture are things he can easily be spared from.

[V.] The Avatar

What is an Avatar?

In short, an Avatar is the mortal extension of a God. All Avatars serve the principles of their chosen deity, while also being bound to the realm of mortals. They are the embodiment of what their God represents, and acts in all ways as their Lord/Lady would. The Avatars are forever bound to the essence of their Divine, and will never relent in fighting for the cause they have so zealously become attached to. They enjoy blessings and gifts from their deity, and some even display extraordinary magic.

An Avatar is the product of flawless belief, of relentless conviction, of unwavering faith and of absolute dedication. An Avatar was once a man, a mortal, who took upon them a cause of something greater than themselves, greater than they could even fathom the complete extent of. By forsaking their own petty issues and becoming one with unyielding belief in divine power and the agenda of those who are above and beyond, the mortal eventually attracts the ever so rare gaze of Divinity. Should the mortal persist, pure in heart and spirit, with perseverance, patience and exclusive faith, dedicating the essence of his being to the deity, then he shall be named Avatar and serve on Eldanar as an emissary of the same divine power he so relentlessly fought for and held above everything else.

These beings, the celestial servants, are very different from the Average Joe in many aspects. As a token of their new mission, a new form is bestowed upon them when they cross the border between mortality and divinity - a form that releases their powers and their mind from the constraints of the mundane world. Along with their new shell, they develop a mindset that transcends even that of the wisest man. They can see the bigger picture, and consequences too far away for mortals to even begin thinking about.

Divine servitude also brings some rules upon the table. Refer to the following sections for more information:

[Back to the ToC]

[VI.] Possessions

-: Kali'xarth, the Voidscepter: Created by Zyrphath himself, the Voidscepter holds the innate ability, when charged and in touch with a source of energy, to warp, shape and even blur reality in a small sphere around itself. Zyrphath knows yet of no way to control, limit or decide the outcome or extent of this effect, but as of now he does not need to and does not plan to either. It was made from various precious items, essences and elements, from all over Entar and beyond, in order to give it the nature it needed to be able to affect magic so deeply; for it is because reality is so intertwined with magic that the Voidscepter can influence the world itself at such a deep and fundamental level.
- Acquired in In Vanwar Forged; In Darkness Risen.

[Back to the ToC]

[VIII.I] The Chapters

Chapter I:
Unruly

 [ Justice Be Served ]
-: Location: Elenion, Valgard.
-: Participants: None.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: This thread is in fact nothing more than a single post. It exemplifies Zyr's troubles in society, being of a quite different opinion than the rest of the world when it comes to acceptable behaviour. It is an important post, though, as it is the "next step" in his journey: He extracts vengeance, "justice", upon a figure he knows was somehow involved in the death of his mother.

 [ Unknown Alliance ]
-: Location: Highlands, Valgard.
-: Participants: None.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: Continuing where Justice Be Served ends, this thread goes to Riaghold for some undisclosed business with the Senator. Zyr is detained, however, several times, experiencing for the X-th time that there are those who can out-do him.

Chapter II:
The Black Hand.

 [ Rite of Passage ]
-: Location: Highlands, Valgard.
-: Participants: Suza, Ephedel.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: After receiving an odd note, Zyr appears in a small town in the Highlands. Well there, he is found by Ephedel and Suza. Ephedel makes an offer he can't resist, and along with Suza, Zyr is brought into the woods for a trial. A band of orcs and a minotaur meet their end, despite both Elves being under the influence of Ephedel's mindtricks. The result was satisfying.

 [ Castle Illyia ]
-: Location: Dragon Vale, Valgard.
-: Participants: Urocin, Lillith, Ephedel, Malygos, Suza, Merron.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: Resting in Illyia, Zyr is confronted by a smartypants-type of mage and weaver of shadows, Urocin Fuinlhoth. Arrangements for a test is made, and Urocin performs rather well, giving Zyr a thing or two to think about.

At a much later point in time, Zyr returns to Illyia after having been in Tarsis. Before coming to the castle, he had stumbled across Magus in a rather peculiar mood, holding a device of some sort. Zyr is intrigued by the essence of Adramoth the Deceiver and grabs Vir'eirandur, experiencing a communication with the now-dead Necromancer. He utilizes the library, and seeks out knowledge of necromancy, storing both notes and books up in his room. These are all lost when Malygos destroys Illyia.

Touching the fallen legacy of Izurill was the first step to Zyr understanding the importance of finesse and deception rather than brute force.

Chapter III:
Dangerous Alliances

 [ Possible Affiliations ]
-: Location: Highlands, Valgard.
-: Participants: Lyadan, Ritsuzen, Magus, Ephedel, Algus, Raphael, Bejei, Sedalb.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: Zyr meets Algus, Ephedel and Magus. The two latter speak of plans and visions, sending Zyr and Algus out on a mission to retrieve something of an artifact from a certain person of nobility in Miriel. The use of this remains undisclosed.

 [ A Rocky Path ]
-: Location: Elenion, Valgard.
-: Participants: Algus.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: Zyr and Algus are on their way towards Míriel to carry out the task that was given to them. Algus takes note of how the Dark Elf he's riding with is something of an asshole. In return, the Dark Elf learns a few things about keeping a cool temper, even though he might be reluctant to give Algus credit for this.

[ The Storm in Míriel ]
-: Location: Míriel, Andüne.
-: Participants: Algus.
-: Wordcount:

-: Summary: Upon reaching Míriel, the target is quickly localized, and a plan is formed. While Algus is sneaking into the buildings they thought the Eye of the Storm was held, Zyr drew the attention of those men of arms that were present around, waking them all up in the middle of the night. The haphazardly geared bunch met a quick demise, as Zyr revealed the calls of threat he summoned them with were coming from himself.

But all things at a price. Zyr gaped over more than he could chew, and ended up on the brink of death along with the enemy. Battered and broken, he collapsed on the battlefield, his death being an all too real possibility. With a feat of dumb luck, however, a local healer mistakes him for one of their own men, and brings him into her house. A few days later, Zyr wakes up, very much alive, and in pretty good condition. He slashes up the woman that brought him in, and proceeds to search for Algus.

Amidst this all, he replaced his broken equipment with that of one of the fallen soldiers. He leaves a bloody mark in the shape of a hand inside a house, and eventually meets with Algus again. They find a few horses and make their escape. Algus informs Zyr that he will not be coming to the castle, as he has unfinished business to take care of before being able to return.

Chapter IV:
A Moon of Black

[ Whispers in the Dark ]
-: Location: Highwood, Elentári.
-: Participants: Arkazar.

In a desolate settlement high in the Khalar Mountains, he met a halfbreed by the name of Ataleu. Much to Zyr's surprise, this woman was a disciple of Maedhros. A welcomed surprise, but he could not help but wonder what in all the green pixies she was doing up here. He leaves it be, and invites her to come along on his quest, also telling her about this "gathering of like-minded people".

They both realize that this is what they're looking for, and climb up to it.

The tower of pure white is protected by spirits and unknown entities. Zyr, taken by rage, explodes in the direction of the annoyances emanating from the tower's very core. Magic of shadows ignites within, and engulfs him in black flames. He is left alone, and they both make their way to what must be the entrance of the tower.

Well inside, after something of a trial for Zyr, it becomes quite clear that this tower is highly unusual. Around them, statues come to life, and a bloody battle follows. He approaches her, speaking in ambiguous words. There's something peculiar about the situation, and Zyr suspects foul play from the very beginning. A sweet and innocent girl, left alone in the middle of a thick and not-so-harmless forest? No. He put two and two together, and it wasn't long until his conclusion was confirmed.

Conor, a man sent by Kaelyn's father, stepped out and commanded her release. Zyr was not much pleased, and took to meeting the small group head on. He pushed Kaelyn behind his own back, taking a defensive stance that marked her as something he would not give up. Conor and his men fell, but not without wounding the Dark Elf. Conor was left alive, but the others had their deathblows delivered one by one. And it was then Zyr witnessed Kaelyn's power. Coming out of Maedhros' honor, they meet Suza. The moment of reunion is short, for there was not too much time to be had. Off to Valdriel's temple. [IX.] Epilogue

* * * * * *

..the final page has been reached, and the book slams shut before your eyes. You stand there for lord knows how many minutes, taking in and digesting all the information. Back and forth you ponder the words that jumped out and into your eyes. The evil you have discovered is incredible, far more intense than you had ever imagined - despite having prepared yourself for this, expecting the epitome of all things vile.

Your mind quakes under the pressure of the new information you have just gathered. You come to a realization. Where is it that you are? Panic takes you, and your first instinct is to get out. Up and out. Your feet wants to move, but you cannot. Moment after moment races by, while you stand there, paralyzed in fear. But persistency pays off. After an eternity of mustering courage, you manage to get your feet off the ground.

As you are about to turn around, a low whistle reaches your ear. It's as if a slight breeze passes through, whispering softly to you. You stop, remaining still where you are. Solemnly, you stand your ground. You close your eyes, and everything becomes dark. Only a few seconds later, a darkness even more black than the lightless depths of this cave engulfs you. There is no going back up.
